Summary: A group of tabloid newspaper reporters (William Hurt, Andie MacDowell) investigate a report of a real live angel living in Iowa. They come upon Michael (John Travolta), who does indeed appear to be an angel, even though an unconventional one. As the reporters and Michael interact, they will all be changed forever.

Review:

Tim: This is an ineffective film that never capitalizes on its strengths or utilizes its full potential. For a movie about an angel on earth, this is strangely lacking in inspiration and in heart. As the movie progresses, we learn Michael is here for a reason, but we're never expressly told the reason and we vaguely see the difference he makes. The film falters in the third act, missing the opportunity to tug at our heartstrings.

John Travolta is good as the unlikely angel. Though not terrific, he is as good as he needs to be. William Hurt is enjoyable as usual. Andie MacDowell is decent and holds the film together in many ways.

The movie does have several funny moments, but it can't shake the feeling that this is a halfhearted attempt at a movie. The concept is brilliant and Michael had every reason to be amazing. It is a shame that it turned out as forgettable as it did. It is probably tempting to want to see this movie. It sounds like it would be funny and enjoyable. Just keep in mind that you will more than likely be disappointed. If, on the other hand, you want to see a movie that is incredibly ineffective despite all evidence to the contrary (purely from an academic point of view), then this is a perfect case study of everything right gone wrong.
