Summary: The machines wage an all out war against Zion and the humans living there, including Neo (Keanu Reeves), Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), and Trinity (Carrie Ann-Moss) must fight to protect it. In their attempts to save Zion, Neo enters the matrix where he discovers Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) is still alive, and has cloned himself countless times. As the clock winds down on Zion's destruction, Neo must delve deeper into the matrix than ever before.
Review:
Tim: The special effects are much better and more stylish than the original. However, it lacks all the heart and soul that the original film had. The Matrix Reloaded is good, but not in the same league as the revolutionary original. This might have been inevitable, but it is still disappointing.
The entire Zion storyline only complicates the film. The in-fighting between Morpheus and the other shop commanders is uninteresting and a complete waste of our time. The Zion party/borderline orgy scene is incredibly lame and perhaps the low point of the film.
On the positive side, the fight scenes are much more elaborate and perhaps the greatest ever filmed. Nothing can prepare you for how amazing they are. This is the one thing the Wachowski brothers did right.
The freeway scene is one of the most visually stunning, mind blowing scenes of all time. You simply cannot get enough of it, and even repeated viewings will cause you to drop your jaw in awe.
Although to a lesser scale, the Wachowski brothers do manage some dialogue that sends chills down our spines. Morpheus gets all the best lines in this film. Watch for the best speaking scene in the movie when Morpheus begins, "I believe it is our fate to be here, it is our destiny. I believe this night holds for each and every one of us, the very meaning of our lives," and ends with "What if tomorrow the war could be over? Isn't that worth fighting for? Isn't that worth dying for?" This is powerful and The Matrix Reloaded at its best.
This movie is visually superior to the original, that much is for sure. However, it lacks the awe that we felt when we first discovered that Neo was The One. This film also reaches a confusing and silly climax. The architect? Come on, this is one of the most bewildering and ridiculous scenes of all time. Spare us, please.
