Review:
Tim: You can't start talking about this movie without focusing first on Christian Bale. He lost an alarming 63 pounds for the role. He ended up around 120 pounds, and he is barely there. There are several scenes with his shirt off, and it is startling to say the least. His weight loss is so extreme that you cannot take your eyes off him. He looks terrible, and it is around this that the movie is so believable. He absolutely dedicated himself in the role, going so far as to request to drop down to 100 pounds (the producers refused, fearing for his health).
The movie is a thrilling mystery, one that blends the line between reality and insanity. This fuels the movie, and you will be drawn into the story, wondering desperately what you are seeing is real. There are indeed answers to the big questions, but those do not come until the end. The movie is really a showcase for Bale, who has never been better. You will not be able to take your eyes off him, although you will want to. This is an unforgettable film, and I highly recommend it. It will stay with you long, long after you finish watching.
The Machinist is a unique, original film. It is the kind of movie that is made far too seldom these days. It is stark, mesmerizing, and gets into your head. This is a movie you will not soon forget.
