Summary: During World War II, baseball suffered from a lack of male players. To keep the game alive, women's teams began to pop up around the country. This film follows one team, the Georgia Peaches, who are led by a pair of Oregon sisters (Geena Davis, Lori Petty), and coached by an alcoholic has-been (Tom Hanks).
Review:
Tim: This is a very good movie in general. The cast is superb, and director Penny Marshall tells a convincing and funny story about an all girls' baseball league. This is a lighthearted film and if not taken too seriously, is actually quite good fun.
The highlight of the film, however, is Tom Hanks. He makes this film truly great. His Jimmy Dugan is such a great character. Hanks has a way with yelling, and as Dugan he gets to yell quite a bit. These moments account for the most hilarious of the film. Who can forget the, "Crying?? There's no crying in baseball!" scene, or any of Hanks' scene-stealing performance.
In addition to Hanks, Davis is surprisingly good. She's oftentimes a hit or miss actress, but she proves here that she can be strong and likeable. Lori Petty is surprisingly enjoyable to watch on screen. She's not such a big name star, but she dazzles on screen and oftentimes makes the biggest impact out of the entire cast. Madonna, making her film debut, and Rosie O'Donnell somehow complement each other perfectly. Their duo adds yet another strong element to this film. And, last but not least, Jon Lovitz needs to be mentioned for a short but great role- "Its no skin off my Ashtabula" Hilarious!
A League of Their Own is an all around terrific film. Its fun, funny, and has a terrific cast that benefit from great writing and directing. This is definitely a film worth seeing, and one that gets better everytime you watch.
