Summary: A young firefighter (Joaquin Phoenix) becomes trapped in a burning building and while trying to escape, reflects on his life and the guidance of his mentor (John Travolta), who has always brought him home safely.

Review:

Tim: This is quite possibly the greatest firefigher movie ever made. You could argue against that, but in the end, I'd be right and you'd be wrong.

Ladder 49 really shows what it is like to be a firefighter. It is interesting to find that watching the off hours are just as fascinating to watch as the fire scenes. This is a testament to everyone involved in the movie. It really is one big family at the firestation, and that fact captures the audience.

Joaquin Phoenix is excellent. He really plays a dimensional and rounded character. He is someone we can cheer for and get behind. There is no telling where his career can take him.

John Travolta gives a subtle and great performance as the fire chief. He serves as a mentor to Phoenix and the two are great together on screen.

The fire scenes are spectacular. This movie really shows how chaotic and frightening it is to be in a burning building, trying to rescue someone. While the actual fire may not be as fun to watch as in Backdraft, the scenes here are still pretty intense.

Best of all, Ladder 49 is character-driven. You learn to love the characters on screen and you truly indentify with them. You will be amazed at how much emotion this movie evokes from you. This film is superb in all aspects and makes a truly enjoyable time.
