Review:

Tim: Killers is a bit of an odd movie. It comes across as a romantic comedy, with two typical rom-com leads. Katherine Heigl has really hit the romantic comedy genre hard in recent years, so this felt a bit like the typical film we'd come to expect from her. And yet, there was also this action angle, which makes the movie feel very different. In fact, the action made up a surprisingly large amount of the film. This made the movie feel different, but also a bit hard to nail down. I'm not sure who exactly was the intended audience.

I actually didn't mind most of the film. I thought I would find it unenjoyable, but it was funny, action-packed, and for the most part, entertaining. However, the film suffers from a few huge flaws that really dragged it down for me. There was one particular hole that felt gaping to me. I will try to explain without spoiling the film. Let's say that it has to do with Kutcher's neighbors and his spy abilities. It just didn't make any sense to me, and as the film went on and on, the hole got bigger and bigger until it reached the point where it ruined the whole film for me.

The cast was actually pretty good. Katherine Heigl was made for these kinds of movies and has spent so much time in this kind of lightweight fare that she is comfortable in the role. I thought she did a good job. Ashton Kutcher is usually an actor I don't like much. I thought he was fine here. It was a good part for him to take, and he does a pretty good job throughout. The movie has a number of flaws, but I won't count Kutcher as one of them.

The supporting cast is good. Tom Selleck and Catherine O'Hara are pretty fantastic as Heigl's parents. While their roles occasionally become too silly, for the most part, they bring some strong humor to the film. I enjoyed them here. The rest of the cast is made up of familiar faces, but no one does anything spectacular.

Killers does a number of things right. Director Robert Luketic has some real talent as a director, although I wish he would spend his time on more memorable movies. This film features a few moments of Luketic's potential as a director, but it's simply too light to make a difference. It's a film created for pure, mindless, romantic-focused entertainment. It tries to be a bit different, but there's no attempt to be special. I wish this film had tried to be more, although I admit it was better than I expected it to be.
