Review:

Tim: Let me start by saying I absolutely loath direct-to-DVD movies. They are cheaply made, with no care or concern, and their only purpose is to capitalize on the popularity of a title by hoping no one realizes it's a shameful rip-off. These movies suck, and I desperately wish people would stop buying them. I hate these kinds of movies. Unfortunately, I did sit through this one, so I figured I might as well write it up.

Full disclosure- this movie sucked so bad that I did not give it my full attention. I was working on my computer while I watched. Did I miss some things? Probably. However, I watched enough to realize what a giant piece of crap this movie was. I did sit through the whole thing, trying to stay focused as best I could.

The script is just awful. As in many of these direct-to-DVD movies, the story is full of plot holes, the dialogue is atrocious, and no one seems to care too much about what's going on. If you remember the events of Into the Blue, you'll find only a very loose thematic connection here. This truly isn't a sequel, as much as it's a rip off. We have two divers searching for something in the ocean. Much money is promised to them, but the container's contents cause issues for them. None of this really matters, because the plot is so far-fetched and idiotic. There's huge, huge plot holes almost throughout the entire film. It was really hard to watch.

The cast is mostly a debacle, and they look even worse because the film's dialogue is awful. I have no idea who Chris Carmack is, but I do know that he is a pathetic excuse for an actor. I actually like Laura Vandervoort from my days of watching "V". It was great to see her getting some work, but I can't believe she was in this turkey of a movie. Her performance is better than most in the film, but that's not saying anything. I will say that I liked seeing both Marsha Thomason (from "Lost") and David Anders (from "Heroes"), but neither is given much of a character. Their performances were lackluster. So, the movie gets props for using recognizable actors, but the script ruins any hope they had of being good.

Here's the craziest thing about this movie- it was directed by Stephen Herek. Are you kidding me? How did he fall this low? He directed Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, The Mighty Ducks, Mr. Holland's Opus and other classic movies. Why in the world is he directing Into the Blue 2: The Reef? I know he hasn't made a great movie in a while, but has his career really come this far down? I felt bad for him, because it's obvious that he either didn't care, or had his hands so tied by the script and the miniscule budget that his movie came out as crappy as everyone likely expected.

In conclusion, Into the Blue 2: The Reef is trash, and never should have been made. I certainly won't be checking out many other direct-to-DVD titles based on this one. I pray that people stop buying these movies, and I dream of a day with trash like this ceases to exist. What's even worse- even though the original wasn't great, I still liked it. This one taints that memory.
