Review:
Tim: What a horrible film this is. Its nearly unwatchable. Probably the first thing you heard about this movie was Meg Ryan's desperate attempt to get away from her girl-next-door image. First of all, I LOVE Meg Ryan in the girl-next-door roles. She had no need to try to get away from it. Ok, ok, let's say she wanted to expand her acting roles- did she have to choose THIS film to do it in?? It's awful. All the fuss about Ryan breaking away from her safe roles is overplayed. Her performance here is boring, unexciting, and not worth seeing (similar to the rest of the movie).
The film isn't helped by Mark Ruffalo. He is just awful throughout the whole film. I despised his character (and his performance) the moment I saw him. That being said, there are absolutely no likeable characters in this film. I hate movies like that. You have to have at least one person you can root for, you can get behind. I cared nothing for any of these characters. I actually hoped Ryan's character would be killed at several points throughout the movie (and don't even get me started on Ruffalo).
In the Cut tries to be thrilling, gritty, and realistic, but it's vulgar, gruesome, and utterly forgettable. And what the hell does the title mean anyway? I'm still scratching my head on that one. To make matters even worse, the ending is just ridiculous and terrible. The best part of the ending? The movie is finally over! I was really, really glad to be done with this piece of trash. Good career move, Meg.
