Summary: A screenwriter (Humphrey Bogart) becomes a suspect in the death of a young woman. He and his alibi (Gloria Grahame) fall in love after they meet at the police station. Although there is insufficient evidence linking him to the murder, after a series of violent outbursts, suspicion begins to mount- threatening to tear their relationship apart.

Review:

Tim: I really liked this movie because it was such a departure from most of Humphrey Bogart's films. This is a true film-noir, a brooding and twisting tale that shows a darker side of humanity. The movie is a fascinating study of violence, suspicion, and the effects these have on relationships.

Humphrey Bogart gives one of his best performances. He is so dark, damaged, and vulnerable. He is amazing to watch on screen. Bogart has given some truly impressive performances in his career, and this ranks up there with the best of them. Dixon Steele is such a great character, and this is all due to Bogart's performance. Gloria Grahame also gives a good performance- the scenes between Bogart and Grahame are very, very emotional. You won't be able to shake these from your head.

The film boasts some memorable scenes. Bogart and Gloria Grahame have one of my all-time favorite scenes. Bogart's line delivery is classic- "It has his story against mine, but of course, I told my story better." This stands as one of my favorite Bogart moments. He also has my favorite line from the whole movie- "There's no sacrifice too great for a chance at immortality." The writing of this film is absolutely superb.

In a Lonely Place is such a good movie for so many reasons. It is unique in many ways, features excellent performances, some of the best dialogue in years, and much more. This is a classic gem that is well worth watching. Bogart gives us yet another terrific film.
