Review:
Tim: This was a smaller film that did surprisingly well at the box office. People were attracted to this movie for some reason (and for good reason). Undoubtedly, it will draw some comparisons to The Prestige, a similar magician-centered movie. Both are very good, and it is difficult to choose between them. If I had to choose, I'd give a slight edge to The Prestige, although the margin is very small and this movie is very good as well.
There are two main reasons why this film is so good. The first is the cast. Edward Norton is outstanding as the illusionist Eisenheim. He is such a fantastic actor, and he provides that again here. Paul Giamatti is likewise incredible, and it is thoroughly entertaining to see him and Norton interacting on screen. Jessica Biel is surprisingly good here. She's by no means fantastic, but she doesn't detract from the movie at all. Rufus Sewell is in full bad guy mode, and few can do it better than he.
Secondly, the special effects are impressive. Whether it is an orange tree growing out of a seed in a matter of seconds, or a ghostly apparition, Eisenheim's illusions are amazing to see. This, coupled with a tale of murder, power, and mystery, make for a very exciting film.
The Illusionist is an exciting mystery with a superb cast. This is a good movie that is well worth your time. The film is a twisting, turning, mystery that will keep you thoroughly engaged.
