Summary: Arthur Dent learns that his house is set to be demolished, and on that same day, his good friend Ford Prefect (Mos Def) reveals that he is actually an alien, and tells Arthur that the Earth is set to be demolished as well. Right before the blast, the pair hitch a ride and begin an unforgettable intergalactic journey.

Review:

Tim: Douglas Adams' novels are undoubtedly brilliant, but they don't necessarily make the best movies. That being said, this is still a fairly enjoyable film. The sheer originality and craziness at least sets it apart from other science fiction movies. There are a few moments when certains cenes showcase Adams' genius. The "So long and thanks for all the fish" song is hilarious. Also watch for the whole home/earth destruction parallel, as well as the whale commentary. This is really a thinking man's sci fi film.

The cast is decent, but leave something to be desired. Martin Freeman is a good everyman, but makes you want a slightly stronger hero. I love the casting of Mos Def, and he gives easily the best performance of the film. Zooey Deschanel is a good leading lady, and Alan Rickman's voice is perfect for the constantly depressed robot.

The best part of the movie are all the small quirks and jokes. I love the "don't think!" scene, the need for the towel, and the "answer" to the universe, life, and everything. The movie is most enjoyable when you can see Adams' genius against the backdrop of a zany sci fi adventure. The whole idea of there being a hitchhiker's guide to the universe. This is a novel and exciting idea that is big enough for more than one movie. I sincerely hope Adams' other books are made into sequels for this film. The "restaurant at the end of the universe" comment suggests this is possible, and I, for one, am totally behind it.
