Review:
Tim: I don't know, I just have a hard time with movies like this. Ben Stiller almost had a monopoly on the "I'm a normal guy who finds himself in incredibly bizarre and embarassing situations" shtick. This is getting old. The gags are slightly different, the jokes in bad taste are slightly different, and there's a little variance in the shocking gross-out humor, but really, the difference is negligible.
I suppose Ben Stiller isn't too bad in the movie. He has enough experience in these films to know how to get a few laughs. Malin Akerman was well cast, and her transformation from a dream to a nightmare is believable. Michelle Monaghan was also perfectly cast. She was excellent in the movie. Jerry Stiller was a total waste. Carlos Mencia continues his streak as the least funny comedian alive.
Part of my problem with the movie is that Stiller's character is hard to root for. He, self-admittedly acts incredibly inappropriate. Plus, so much of what he does is fueled by pure stupidity. It is hard to like a character so idiotic. I also laughed relatively few times. There were a few humorous moments here and there, but this is not a very funny movie. Too many of the jokes fall flat.
The Heartbreak Kid could be called a number of things, but I'll go with a "disappointment." The Farrelly Brothers are very much hit-and-miss. THis movie is undoubtedly a miss.
