Review:
Tim: I have lost increasingly large portions of respect for Quentin Tarantino in recent years. His choices have bordered on absurd, and this was another questionable decision. I love the desire to pay homage to a genre of films, but this just doesn't work. Did people really like this movie? Yes. Do people know what the heck they are talking about? Probably not. I will admit that the film gets infinitely better at the end. It almost borders on genius. Sadly, for Tarantino and everyone involved, it falls short. This is a silly movie that doesn't quite reach the impact it desired.
Kurt Russell gives a surpisingly good and deranged performance. He swings a wide variety of emotions, and is at his best towards the film's ends. Rosario Dawson gives a decent performance but doesn't have a great deal to do. Rose McGowan is fairly worthless in her role.
Grindhouse: Death Proof is not a great movie. It is a subpar attempt at paying homage to a genre of films that are no longer being made (and for good reason). There are a few surprisingly good moments, but they are not nearly enough to overcome the sheer absurdness of the film. There is just not much of a reason for this movie, and it feels like a waste of time and effort.
