Summary: The head guard (Tom Hanks) of the death row section of a penitentiary has his life changed when a gentle giant (Michael Clarke Duncan) convicted of brutally murdering two little girls is brought into his custody. As the two form an unlikely friendship, the guard begins to wonder if his prisoner truly is guilty or if he may be, in fact, a miracle.

Review:

Tim: This is a movie about miracles. The supernatural is such an interesting topic and in the hands of Stephen King, can produce tremendous results. There is a lot to say about King's nonhorror books being better than his horror ones, and this movie furthers that idea.

The cast of the film is absolutely excellent. Tom Hanks does what he does best, and really shines when leading an ensemble cast. The real story, however, is Michael Clarke Duncan. He gives a moving, beautiful performance. His quiet strength and innocence make his character remarkable on the screen. David Morse, Same Rockwell, and Barry Pepper all add good performances.

The biggest downside to the film is its length. At over three hours, you really have to prepare yourself mentally before you sit down. I wish it was a little shorter, but I can't imagine any of it being cut out- every frame is essential.

The Green Mile is also a very emotional movie. Any story abou the men on death role will contain elements of emotion- especially during the fragile last moments of a man's life. It is against this backdrop that we get an even more emotional story about a miracle and how that miracle changes everything around him.

The Green Mile has everything you could hope it would- a terrific cast, great drama, quite a bit of humor, and at least one moment that you put you on the verge of tears. I salute everyone who helped make this film a contemporary classic.
