Review:

Tim: This is not a good movie. The large ensemble cast dramas oftentimes simply don't work. I'm actually surprised that people like this movie. I honestly do not see why. The movie is extraordinarily depressing, and the "hopeful" resolution at the end is pitiful. It makes me think the whole world has gone to hell and I might as well throw myself head-first into the Grand Canyon.

The cast is terrible. Danny Glover tries to act all dramatic way too hard, so it doesn't seem natural at all. Steve Martin is not good in the least. Mary McDonnell never feels right and doesn't contribute much. Mary-Louise Parker was my least favorite part of the cast, and that is quite an achievement. Kevin Kline is the strongest cast member, actually giving a good performance.

There are quite a few aspects of this film that I can't stand. The reoccuring helicopter might be the most annoying, assinine inclusion of the picture. The dream sequence also deserves to have its originator taken out back and beaten severely.

The movie is just so completely ridiculous and melodramatic, from finding babies in the park to early, pre-morning revelations, to teaching your kid how to drive in Los Angeles. The whole movie takes itself far too seriously.

The best part of the film is a quote by Steven Martin right near the end-"That's part of your problem: you haven't seen enough movies. All of life's riddles are answered in the movies." This is one strength in an ocean of flaws.
