Review:

Tim: To fully understand why Goldeneye is my favorite James Bond movie, you have to look at some context. There hadn't been a great Bond movie in 18 years, and there hadn't even been a single Bond movie in six years, the longest break between them in the history of the franchise. Since The Spy Who Loved Me, we had the increasingly aging Roger Moore and the drop in quality that resulted from that. We had the brief tenure of Timothy Dalton, and his good-but-not-great films. Then, we had a six year gap between Bond films. With all of that, we finally get Goldeneye, an action packed adventure movie starring the new Bond, Pierce Brosnan. It was a very exciting time for the franchise, and it reinvigorated it.

This is a tremendous film. Pierce Brosnan is incredible in his role as 007. I know some people criticize his efforts, but in this, his first film, he ranks up there with Connery. I loved Brosnan as 007. His was slick, suave, and everything I am looking for in Bond. Brosnan exuded that sense of cool that makes James Bond so enjoyable.

The film features outlandish action sequences that no one could pull off- yet when James Bond does it, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it. There are a number of them here. Martin Campbell does a fantastic job of giving us some incredible action scenes. The tank chase is terrific. The climactic battle scenes are intense and entertaining. Goldeneye is an action packed thrill ride that pounds the action into you time and again.

The film features great performances from the supporting cast. Sean Bean as Agent 006 is one of my favorite Bond villains. I love the idea of 006 v. 007- that right there makes this one of the coolest Bond movies of all time, and I loved the battles between these two men. Izabella Scorupco gives a good performance, and she is one of my all time favorite Bond girls. She has the looks, but also came across as believably intelligent. She worked very well with Brosnan, and I thought she really made an impact on the film.

While Connery is still my favorite Bond, I had no problem admitting that Goldeneye is my favorite Bond movie. This is the first Bond film of the 90s, and one of the most action packed, entertaining of the entire franchise. It is impressive how this franchise continues to reinvent itself. Who would have thought the 18th film in the franchise could be the best? I love this movie, and it remains one of my favorite action movies of all time. It is terrific, and simply a joy to watch.
