Summary: An African bushman, Xixo (N!xau) and his tribe are stunned when the gods drop a gift, a coke bottle. Their isolated tribe does not know what it is, but they soon determine it is a great evil. Xixo then takes it upon himself to embark on a long journey to the end of the world to throw this great evil away. Along the way, he meets up with the civilized world, and neither knows what to make of the other.
Review:
Tim: This is a zany, absurd, and hilarious movie. This film spins our world around, showing Western civilization through the eyes of a bushman. What is familar to us suddenly becomes odd and comical. It is a really brilliant concept.
The Gods Must be Crazy makes us laugh because it is a high energy, intelligent comedy that uses a wide variety of comedic strategies to get laughs, and isn't afraid to laugh at itself. The feeling of it being a quasi-documenatry only adds to the enjoyment factor.
The story of the introduction of the Coke bottle into bushman culture (and their perception of it as a great evil) and the subsequent quest to rid themselves of the evil by journeying to the end of the earth is fascinating to watch. The story is one of naivety, but also one of innocence and charm.
It is hard to describe exactly why this movie is funny, but it is most definitely enjoyable and really makes you laugh. You can't stop yourself from being amazed at seeing two cultures clash. These differences are stark. They can either be violent and deadly- or in this case, very, very funny. This film is original, dynamic, and truly enjoyable to watch.
