Review:
Tim: This is one of the greatest masterpieces of all time. Francis Ford Coppola is a genius for the creation of this film. There is so much to like here and so much done right. This movie was not predetermined to be a classic- it could have gone any different way. It is a testament to Coppola and others involved that this movie turned out the way it did. This first film of the Godfather trilogy influenced practically all mafia moves that came afterwards. The Godfather is nothing less than an epic masterpiece that everyone must see.
Coppola put together one of the greatest casts in film history. Marlon Brando gives the performance of a lifetime as the patriarch of the Corleone family. His performance is unforgettable, and makes this film the success that it is. It is impossible to take your eyes off of him as he gives one of the most memorable performances of all time. His Academy Award for Best Actor is well deserved. He is helped greatly by the supporting cast, but most especially by Al Pacino and Robert Duvall. Al Pacino is absolutely amazing as Michael Corleone. It is fascinating to watch his transformation from war hero to head of the Corleone family. His character is perhaps the most important of the film, and he does not disappoint. Robert Duvall is perfect as the trusted advisor of the family. Duvall isn't showy or flashy, but makes a huge impact on the film. I also loved James Caan as Sonny. He really adds a great deal to the film with his complex performance, and equals the intensity of the rest of the cast. These actors manage to blend the harsh, violent life of the mafia and the undying loyalty of family together beautifully.
Every American needs to see The Godfather, as its cultural and film importance is undeniable. This film gives viewers a look at the inside life of a mafia family, in a realistic, gritty manner. There isn't a great deal that can be said about this film, except that if you have not seen it, you are missing out on one of the greatest American films ever made, and you need to see it. There are so many famous lines, like, "I'll make him an offer he can't refuse," "Leave the gun... take the canolli," and many more. The importance of this film cannot be overstated. It is a true classic in every sense of the world, and one of the best films of all time.
* Update- I originally rated this movie a 9, but that was before I watched The Godfather: Part II and realized that although that movie is a true classic, this one was even better.
