Summary: Slick, arrogant, and funny newspaper reporter "Fletch" Fletcher (Chevy Chase) is approached by a mysterious millionaire (Tim Matheson) who wants Fletch to kill him so his wife can receive insurance money. Fletch agrees, but believes everything is not as it seems. He begins a frantic search for the truth before the time will come when he will be asked to kill a man, and perhaps may be walking into a trap.
Review:
Tim: Fletch is the type of movie that you know was just hilarious in the 80s and is still very funny today. The humor is more sophisticated and subtle that much of the comedy that rolls out of Hollywood today.
Chase gives a great performance. His comedic timing is perfect. He has great writing to back him up and delivers one-liners that will make you laugh out loud. There are certainly some jokes that miss by a lot, but Chase nails an equal amount of others.
I like the idea of putting funnyman Chase in the middle of a pretty interesting mystery. Its fascinating to watch him as a humorous but pretty intelligent man trying to unravel the enigma of a man who seems a little too eager to die. As Fletch tries to figure it all out, you find yourself more and more intrigued with the film. Credit should be given to Ritchie for directing a very layered film.
One of the funniest parts of the film is when Chase dresses in so many different characters' outfits. He miraculous makes all of them believable (at least to those around him). Fletch is mostly an opportunity for Chase to just be funny, but once you get caught up in the story, you really won't care. This is a pretty funny movie.
