Review:

Tim: This movie felt incredibly dated from the first moment I started watching it. I thought the whole Chinese horror remake thing peaked five or six years ago. Since then, I can recall dozens of failed attempts (Dark Water, The Grudge). This is a pointless film that entirely felt like a cheap way to cash in on a subgenre past its prime. Nothing in the movie feels fresh or exciting. There's almost no thrills, and a conclusion so weak and silly that it spoils the very, very few good things about the movie up to that point.

Jessica Alba is decent, but not good (God, I just had deja vu- I must have written that statement in just about every movie she's ever been in). She's not incredibly believable as an accomplished musician, and only about half her scenes showing fear actually seem realistic. The rest of the cast are completely forgettable. I can't even remember Rade Serbedzija in the movie, and I generally like his work. The whole cast is your typical horror film line-up: one pretty girl in trouble and a bunch of nobodies.

I would have found more enjoyment for this film if it gave me something, anything different from the countless other disappointing horror movies in recent years. I'm always willing to like a film that doesn't deserve it because of an unexpected twist or a fright that gets me out of my seat. This movie offered none of that. It was boring. I didn't care about any of the characters or the situations they found themselves in. It is just a pointless movie. There's better Asian horror film remakes out there (go watch The Ring again). I'd pass this movie by (and I have to include one tongue-in-cheek reference to how this film made ME want to be blind).
