Review:
Tim: This is a movie based on the first novel of a 17 year old. It shows. This is a silly, inferior film that somehow managed to attract a fairly decent cast. This is really just a meshing together of Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings. This is not original and not overly clever, either.
Despite a few decent moments, for the most part, the movie can't really shake the feeling that it is a humongous rip-off. Everything has been borrowed, and nothing feels new. Even worse, the special effects leave something to be desired. They aren't altogether horrible, but not cutting edge, and it shows. This gives the movie a cheap, rushed feel to it.
The cast is fairly strong. Edward Speleers does a decent job in the lead role. Jeremy Irons is surprisingly enjoyable in his role. John Malkovich is far too over-the-top to be enjoyable. Rachel Weisz, in an likely casting decision, does a very good job of voicing the dragon.
Eragon is a cheap, third-tier fantasy film that probably should never have been made. It will provide a few thrills for those unfamiliar with good filmmaking, but for most audiences, it will be a forgettable mess.
