Review:

Tim: For the longest time, I put off seeing this movie. This is partially due to the fact that I thought it looked rather stupid,a nd partially due to the fact that I heard some negative comments about it. I am glad to report both assumptions proved to be erroneous. To be fair, this is still one of the weaker Best Picture winners of the recent past. However, it is not wholly undeserving of its win.

The film is an emotional, epic-like story. While it doesn't have the grand scope some Best Pictures have had, everything about this movie feels much bigger than it actually is.

Ralph Fiennes is so good, both in his "English patient" mode, but especially in his flashbacks. The first time we see him in a flashback is a little startling and will firmly plant itself in your mind. I can still see him so clearly in my mind, standing against the backdrop of the scorching desert. Kristin Scott Thomas gives a very strong performance as well and is more likeable than I've ever seen her. Naveen Andrews is surprisingly enjoyable and is one of the best parts of the film. Colin Firth is a bit drab and not as effective as he should have been. Juliette Binoche is decent, but not superb.

If you can make it past Fiennes' scarred body (which is not as disgusting as you might think), you will find a story of love and betrayal set against a powerful historical backdrop. The English Patient is a well made movie that also manages to entertain. There is a terrific cast, and even Anthony Minghella's direction style isn't too bad here. This is a good movie.
