Review:

Tim: Video game adaptations have not had an easy time finding their way to the big screen, and when they do, they are often a total disaster. This film might not be a complete and utter fiasco, but it is close. I wonder if anyone that saw the trailer for this film has even the slightest doubt that it would suck.

I still believe it is possible to make a very good movie out of the popular video games, Doom, but this is not it. The fault rests almost completely on the script- it is a watered down rip off of countless other films, lazily thrown together with the hope that the movie's title and video game source material would be enough to attract movie goers to the theatres (this route was chosen instead of taking the insane route of producing a good movie).

The cast is not altogether bad, although they appear ridiculous delivering the terrible dialogue the script provided. Keith Urban and The Rock are both great choices, and exactly the type of people you want for this type of movie. Sadly, their characters are one-dimensional and have been used almsot exactly in dozens of previous, crappy movies. This is apparent as the film progresses and we are not the least bit involved in the story.

The video game scenes (the first person shooter) were a nice, gimmicky twist, but they are wasted, because at that point, we just don't care what is happening on screen.

I am a realistic guy. I didn't expect poetry in motion, or for this film to be anything but a fun, mindless action flick. Sadly, Doom can't even live up to those diminished expectations.
