Summary: A fugitive (Nicole Kidman) comes to Dogville, where she is befriended by Tom (Paul Bettany), the most moral man in Dogville. What starts out as a perfect relationship sours as the town begins to resent her.

Review:

Tim: I would very much recommend knowing exactly what you are getting yourself into before you watch this film. I entered with no clue, and was shocked to learn this was a bit of experimental filmmaking, and was more of a filmed stage production than a movie. It took a while to get used to, but I eventually did. Also, while watching the movie, I disliked it immensely for some hard-to-explain reason. I almost hated it. As the film progressed, I started asking myself some questions, most importantly- "Who is the guiltiest person in the film?" I'd love to tell you the answer, but I don't want to ruin the movie for you. All I will say is that it isn't who you'd expect. Here's a follow-up question to ask yourself: "Who is the best and most noble character?" Again, it is not who you would expect. The end of the film is shocking and at that moment, everything makes perfect sense, and you are stunned at the insight and meaning this social commentary delivers.

Nicole Kidman is truly fantastic. She rises a few notices in my book. I was thoroughly impressed. Paul Bettany has one of the most difficult roles and delivers it flawlessly. James Caan is terrific and this might be the first role of his I've ever liked.

Dogville is a difficult movie to watch and takes a great deal of effort, but you will be rewarded for making it all the way through the film.
