Summary: The local sheriff calls for Destry (James Stewart) to come to his town and act as his deputy, to clean up the corruption that has run rampant. However, when Destry arrives, the sheriff is shocked to learn that he is not like his gunslinger father, but doesn't even carry a gun! Despite pleas for him to leave, Destry insists on staying and cleaning up the town in his own way.

Review:

Tim: This is a really enjoyable Western. I didn't think I'd like this movie very much, but it is just impossible not to have fun watching this.

James Stewart is terrific as a deputy who doesn't like guns. This seems like a major contradiction, but Stewart pulls it off flawlessly. There is something so likeable about Stewart. He possesses this charm and charisma which makes his awe-inspiring on the screen. He is very, very good as a cowboy and this stands up as a good entry into his film career.

Marlene Dietrich is very good as Frenchy. She plays the saloon girl with remarkable excitement. She and Una Merkel have one of the film's best scenes, a destructive cat fight between them. Dietrich's performance could be overlooked, save for a startling finish.

This is not your typical Western, although it has many typical elements- a new sheriff (or deputy) comes into town to clean up the corrupt nature of the place. This film puts an interesting twist on the usual genre entry.

Destry Rides Again is a fun, exciting, and memorable Western. Stewart shines brilliantly in another likeable performance. This is a good movie.
