Review:

Tim: I felt a great deal of ambivalence towards this film. As much as I love Denzel Washington (and I do), I have started to grow a bit tired of his insistence on playing nothing but cops, federal agents, and military officers. Here, he's an ATF agent, which is not much of a stretch. I was also unsure of how the time travel aspect would work. Luckily, director Tony Scott is on the very top of his game here. The time travel scenes add a refreshing quality to the typical action thriller. This helps the movie feel fresh, and not something we've seen countless times before.

While Washington needs to branch out a bit, I have to admit he is so good in these roles. There is a surprisingly large romantic aspect of the film, which adds greatly to the overall quality of the movie. He plays this equally as well as his action scenes. Val Kilmer does a good job as well, but he certainly has put on a great deal of weight in recent years. He has a small role, but it is fun to watch him. James Caviezel gives a chillingly, unmoral performance. Adam Goldberg adds in a good supporting role. The entire cast works very well together.

Tony Scott gives us some very thrilling action scenes, balanced out well throughout the film. The movie's opening ferry boat explosion is absolutely jaw-dropping. The film's conclusion is surprisingly complex and satisfying. The loose ends of the film all come together brilliantly and in satisfying fashion.

Deja Vu works on a number of different levels. The action and thrills are almost non-stop and the science fiction and romantic aspects make this a unique and enjoyable movie. Despite my initial reservations of the movie, I have to say I was thoroughly, thoroughly impressed.
