Review:

Tim: For some unknown reason, I was really looking forward to this movie. The trailers just worked for me, and I was expecting something great. Happily, I can say that I really, really liked this movie. Abigail Breslin says in the film, “It’s like a love-story mystery!” That pretty much sums up the original appeal. This film takes the romantic comedy (a genre that is becoming more and more stale lately) and enlivens it with a breath of fresh air. This format absolutely works and keeps the audience interested.

It helps to have a wonderful cast in place. Ryan Reynolds is terrific as our romantic hero. Abigail Breslin is great as his daughter (although, oddly enough, while each of their performances work separately, they are not believable for a second as father-daughter). Even better, you couldn’t have picked three better actresses to play the three love interests. I am a huge fan of Elizabeth Banks, and she is so enjoyable to watch here. Rachel Weisz always contends near the top of my favorite-actress category. Surprisingly, the one actress I had a doubt about, Isla Fisher, gives the best performance of the film. She’s absolutely wonderful in her role. All three women give terrific performances, and your loyalties towards each go back-and-forth throughout the film. This really makes the movie enjoyable.

This is also the best part of the film. You have three great actresses each playing wildly different characters, and you know that Reynolds will end up with one of them. Trying to figure this out is half the fun, and you will be rooting for each of these women at various points in the film. This really is a love-story mystery, and I loved playing along.

It also helps that the film is funny and heartwarming. There are some truly hilarious scenes (“You need to go to life rehab” is my favorite), and a number of memorable moments. This keeps the film interesting throughout. However, you have to mention the film’s conclusion, which wraps things up in a more satisfying manner than you could possibly predict, and movie’s concluding scenes are superb. Defintely, Maybe is without a doubt a very enjoyable movie, and one of the best romantic comedies I’ve seen in a long, long time.
