Review:
Tim: Dawn of the Dead is a surprisingly stylish, intelligent horror film. I feel confident saying that it is one of the greatest zombie movies of all time.
That being said, I didn't find the film particularly scary. The zombies don't quite evoke feelings of fear in us. The movie often feels more like an action movie than a horror one. The movie is, however, incredibly intense and keeps us on the edge of our seats for the duration of the film.
The cast is pretty decent. Sarah Polly is surprisingly good. Ving Rhames is once again a strong supporting actor. Mekhi Phifer doesn't really have a lot to do in a thankless role. Jack Weber is actually pretty amazing. I like him a lot.
It is interesting, watching this movie, because long gone are the slow, boring, laughable zombie movies. The films being made now-a-days offer a terrific blend of action and horror.
This is one of the hippest, most fun zombie movies of all time. The game the survivors play why they wait- sniping zombies, is absolutely hilarious. Watch for it. This movie shows how survivors would battle the odds with a determination to survive. This is a very smart and entertaining film.
On a side note, the DVD offers a Lost Tape by Andy, a Special News report, and deleted scenes- all great to watch and among the best special features I've seen.
