Summary: The ruling race of creatures exterminated another race of beings years ago, to stop a prophecy that their reign would be destroyed by one of the now-gone race. However, two of the exterminated race of creatures remained alive, and then begin a quest to restore the dark crystal and fulfill the prophecy.
Review:
Tim: Jim Henson creates a fantastic fantasy world unlike anything seen at the time. The film is lush and beautiful. There is such an array of bizarre creatures that you will feel transported to a different realm. This is nothing short of a visual masterpiece.
Sadly, the dialogue is absolutely atrocious. A group of retarded monkeys on typewriters could have come up with more sophisticated conversation. The idiocy of it oftentimes drove me into a rage.
The story is at least semi-interesting, involving two dying races and a quest to heal the dark crystal. We are kept decently entertained.
I'm not sure who this movie is supposed to appeal to. Kids will probably be quite frightened by some of the images- there are quite a few disturbing ones. Adults (even those that love fantasies) will have serious problems with the dialogue and the simplicity of too many of the movie's elements.
This film was not a commercial success, and for good reason. It feels like so much time and effort was spent on creating the visual aspects that others, like dialogue, plot, and character development were overlooked. This is never a winning combination and I cannot recommend this movie to anyone.
