Summary:During World War II, a young man (Tobey Maguire) raised in an orphanage by the head doctor (Michael Caine) decides to leave behind the only home he's ever known to do something in the world. He befriends a couple (Paul Rudd, Charlize Theron) and works on their apple farm. While the boyfriend is away at war, he begins to develop feelings for his friend's girlfriend. As he works on the farm, he befriends the workers, and learns about the world outside of the orphanage.

Review:

Tim: This is a very powerful drama. It has an excellent cast, all of whom give intense and powerful peroformances. Tobey Maguire can flat out act. I like him and his work a great deal. He is simply ideal for this role. Michael Caine, however, steals the show in a remarkable performance. He and Maguire get along in excellent fashion. Charlize Theron is decent, and only great for a few moments. Paul Rudd gives a surprisingly likeable and excellent performance. This is the best I've ever seen him (except perhaps in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy). Delroy Lindo is good as well.

John Irving penned a superb novel and worked magic turning it into a screenplay. It is a raw, moving tale that shows quite a few interesting sides to humanity. I have no doubt that the book explains much of the events of the film in greater detail, but Irving managed to grab the most important aspects of his book and carry those over to film.

Through Maguire's eyes, we see both the noblest and the worst aspects of humanity. The most controversial aspect of the movie involves abortion. It is a theme that runs throughout the film. I imagine some people would dislike or like this movie based on their belief regarding this issue. Regardless of your stance, this film will make you think, and that is always good.

The Cider House Rules really gets at the gritty parts of humanity. There is a great deal of heartwarming love to be found in the most unlikely of place. I'm glad I saw this movie.
