Review:

Tim: The Bodyguard is interesting because it combines elements of romance and drama, while also managing to be a fairly effective thriller. Not many movies can effectively combine these three elements while not sacrificing one at the expense of the others. This film pulled that off. Some of the most interesting aspects of the film involve the behind-the-scenes look at a professional bodyguard and the lengths one will go to in order to protect a client. The film does a good job of showcasing these dramatic, thrilling moments. I think bodyguards are fascinating, and it's so interesting to have an intimate look at the profession.

I loved Kevin Costner in the role. He has such a great character, and his acting is top notch. I've always been a big fan of Costner, even when others have mercilessly ripped him. He brings intelligence and class to the film, and his bodyguard is a memorable, interesting character. There's some really funny moments, much of which comes from Costner's performance. He's just so good in the film.

Unfortunately, as good as Costner is, this film also has to deal with Whitney Houston. The film would have been much better, but Whitney Houston isn't the greatest actress in the world (which makes it even more ironic that she plays an actress nominated for an Academy Award) and her performance greatly hurts the film. I understand they had to edit quite extensively to cover it up. The re-cutting helps, but Houston still is pretty bad. I wish they had cast another actress in the role. She's a great singer, not a great actress.

The other big issue I had is that the end of the movie is a bit silly. Conclusions are very important, and the film becomes a bit far fetched at the end. I thought up to the cabin scene, the movie seemed almost frighteningly believable. And yet, as the movie moves into its third act, the film sacrifices realism for typical movie thrills, and the movie comes apart a bit. This hurts the film.

Despite these flaws, I still very much enjoy this movie. I love the "I don't want to talk about this again" scene, as well as several other excellent ones. This film is memorable, entertaining, and unique. I think the elements of greatness were here, but Houston's performance and the occasional silliness pulls the film down. Still, this is a solid, entertaining movie. I liked it.
