Review:
Tim: There are bad movies, terrible movies, complete and utter disasters, and then there is Battlefield Earth. I can still remember so vividly going to see this movie in theatres. It was such a monumental disappointment that I left the theatre more confused than ever by a movie. Did I like it? Did I hate it? Only days later did I finally realize what a disgrace this film was. It took me that long to comprehend how terrible it was. This film will always represent the first time in my life I saw a movie in theatres and felt sick to my stomach with distaste. This is a galactically stupid movie, representing the very epitome of disappointment. It took me years to forgive John Travolta.
Travolta is almost despicable in this film. He just looks so unbelievably stupid, and he plays it with such an air of importance that it only adds to how ridiculous he looks. Forest Whittaker is Travolta's partner in crime, and he shoulders some of the blame, because he is just absurd. Barry Pepper surprisingly manages to maintain some dignity throughout the film, but not much.
I won't make any comments about the whole scientology slant. I'm sure people have their opinions, and I certainly have mine, but those don't need to be brought up here, especially when this is the Hindenburg of movie disasters. I am trying to think of some comparable film disasters, but nothing comes to mind on the same level of sheer horror that this bomb aspires to.
Battlefied Earth is a wretched film, a barren wasteland void of talent and intelligence. It remains an open wound, the one film that came closest to getting me to swear off films forever. I survived, however, I carried forth my disgust and my distaste at such an arrogant, colossal failure that set a new bar for movie failures. This movie absolutely sucks.
