Review:
Tim: The original Basic Instinct was such a good movie that I was going to see this one no matter what- even though it came out 14 years after the original, didn't have Michael Douglas (for obvious reasons), and was critically reviled. I still wanted to give it a chance. Is the movie bad? Yes. Is it as godawful as many critics made it out to be? No. The movie is pretty bad, but it is not altogether terrible. There are a few things to enjoy here.
Sharon Stone actually gives a fairly good performance. At times, she's way too over-the-top and quite painful to watch. However, she does have some fairly decent moments. David Morrissey is strong in the role, but sadly, he's no Michael Douglas, and ultimately, this detracts from the movie. He gave as good of a performance as he could, but the cast of the sequel is just not nearly as good as the original.
Like the original, this film is filled with crime, sex, and intrigue. However, where Basic Instinct portrayed those in at least a fairly classy manner. This one does not. The sensual scenes are too gratuitious and feel cheap. The movie wants to be shocking purely for the sake of being shocking, instead of to push along the story or character development. Much of the movie is silly, ridiculous, and it asks way too much of its audience. The mystery is mildly interesting, and it should keep most viewers watching until the end. However, this is a movie that doesn't do any of the little things right, which translates into nothing big doing right for it, either. Basic Instinct 2 probably could have been a lot worse, which is saying something, because it is pretty bad as is.
