Summary:At a popular barbershop, owner Calvin (Ice Cube) wants to get rid of the shop that belonged to his father, because he feels trapped in the business. He makes a deal, selling it to a greedy loan shark (Keith David). However, immediately after, he realizes the importance of the place, and tries to get his shop back.

Review:

Tim: This is a very funny movie. Tim Story does an excellent job directing. The most important aspect of the film is the concept of community. In the film, Calvin doesn't realize that, and that's why he gets into trouble. The community of the barbershop is what makes it so important- and what makes this film so funny.

Barbershop has a tremendous cast. Ice Cube is excellent in the lead role, playing it more subtle than usual, which allows for the more eccentric cast members to shine. Cedric the Entertainer is hilarious in this film, and steals the spotlight from the rest of the cast. Sean Patrick Thomas gives a smaller, but good performance as a smart kid with a lot to learn. Heck, even Eve is good in this movie!

The film work is excellent in this movie. It really captures the insanity that ensues at the barbershop. That plays a vital role in the movie, and in our loving of this institution.

My favorite aspect of this film is not just that its so funny, but that it also delivers a really good message. Ice Cube is perfect as the man who finally gets that message near the end of the film.

The film was criticized for its attacks on Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, and Rodney King. I can't really offer the best opinion on these, because I'm not in the African-American community, but like a lot of people, I think the "attacks" are blown way out of proportion. Barbershop is just a very funny movie, and shouldn't be taken too seriously.
