Summary:The fictionalized account of Cameron Crowe's young life follows the story of a young boy and his assignment to follow the band, Stillwater, and write an inside-story about rock and roll. The trip changes the lives not just of the writer, but all those around him.

Review:

Tim: This is definitely Cameron Crowe's film in all aspects. The movie is loosely based on his own life, writing for magazines like Creem and Rolling Stone. The band, Stillwater is made up, but based on a compilation of several real bands. Almost Famous succeeds in many different levels.

On one hand, it gives a terrific look at the music scene in the 1970s, through the eyes of a teenager and a rock band. The film does a great job being accurate in its portrayal of the decade and the thoughts and culture.

The film benefits the most from some outstanding performances. Kate Hudson gives by far the best performance in the film. In many ways, this role proved to the world that she was a serious actor and showed her potential. Jason Lee is also excellent in the film, as he continues to show his acting ability. I am not a fan of Philip Seymour Hoffman, but if I was, I suppose I'd admit he gives a good performance as well.

Almost Famous really succeeds in its effort to be a coming-of-age story. This story is set against a musical backdrop, and with good performances by Patrick Fugit and Frances McDormand as his mother, the film sparkles and moves. This film is definitely worth checking out.
