Review:

Tim: Is this the worst animated movie of all time? I have to say that it is certainly close. This, along with The Little Mermaid were the big animated releases in 1989. Especially compared to that classic, this film just gets lost in the shuffle. It doesn't help that this movie features not a single likeable character, ridiculous and often terrible songs, a weak voice cast, and some of the most boring scenes of all time. I didn't enjoy a single moment of this entire film- in fact, this movie was absolutely torture to watch. I first saw this film when I was about ten years old, and I hated it then. Years later, I see exactly why this is such a terrible, stupid movie.

Animated movies work when they have memorable characters engaged in an exciting plot. Here, we get selfish, cheating, stealing, lying, no good dogs who are only out for themselves, no matter who they hurt. These are the protagonists. There is nothing good about them at all, and their "redemption" is weak and stupid. I hated Charlie and Itchy- they are annoying, unfunny, silly characters that have almost no redeeming qualities. I cared about nothing or anyone in this movie. Anne-Marie is the most sympathetic character in the film, but she's not exactly intelligent, so it is hard to root for her too much. The big villain is named Carface (maybe the stupidest name I've ever heard). The plot is all about drinking, gambling, thieving dogs. None of it makes any sense and isn't compelling in the least. It was hard work to watch this movie.

Even worse, we are given some of the weakest, most pathetic songs I've ever heard in an animated movie. "You Can't Keep a Good Dog Down," "Let Me Be Surprised," and all the rest of the songs are laughably bad. It hurt my ears to listen to such substandard music.

The film also has some head-scratching, awful scenes. The alligator scene stands out as one of the all-time worst. None of it makes any sense. I appreciate the film's message about doing right and wrong, redemption, and forgiveness, but it is hard to get any of these lessons because we're just praying for the film to be over. This is really just a bad movie. I remember, as a young kid, I liked just about every movie I saw. I never realized that people could actually make bad movies. I remember watching All Dogs Go to Heaven and just thinking it was so stupid. That says a lot about this movie, especially since it hasn't aged well. I hated everything about this movie, including the ridiculous, stupid title. Animated movies aren't exactly the most difficult genre of movie in the world, but this film proves not anyone can do it.
