Review:
Tim: This is one of the strongest, most well-liked and critically praised films of all time. It was nominated for a mind-blowing 14 Oscars (the most nominations in history), winning 6. The nominated categories are pretty impressive, including 2 Best Actress and 2 Best Supporting Actress nominations (probably why neither won). It did win Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Picture. This is a heck of an awards resume.
Better Davis is very good as an aging stage actress. As she loses her standing to someone she trusted, she brings the pain of this betrayal to life on screen. She also delivers the film's classic line, "Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy night." The titular Eve is played exceptionally well by Anne Baxter. This was such a complicated, difficult role, and she delivers it brilliantly. The rest of the cast are all excellent, especially George Sanders, who won the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award. The film even has a small performance by Marilyn Monroe, as if it needed more star power.
This film is so interesting because the character of Eve seems like such a wonderful person, which allows her to burrow into peoples' lives, and unknown to them, set herself up for amazing things while tearing down the lives of everyone around her. The sheer audacity of her deceit and lack of loyalty is almost unbelievable. This is what the movie is all about, and it is hard to forget.
All About Eve scored an amazing 14 Oscar nominations, and would have won more than 6 if it wasn't competing against itself. This is a classic, powerful movie that needs to be on your movie resume. It is unforgettable in a number of ways, all leading to a result that will forever etch itself in your mind.
