Review:
Tim: It is rare to have such an incredible cast on the third film in a disaster movie franchise. I mean, this is an outstanding collection of talent. These actors have been in some of the greatest movies of all time. Why they are all here, I don't exactly know, but I'm glad to see them all together. Jack Lemmon is fantastic. being most familiar with his older, comedic roles, it was surprising to see him as the strong, heroic leading man. He's incredibly believable, though. Olivia de Havilland is good in her small role. James Stewart isn't on screen much, but he's generally enjoyable when he is. Christopher Lee is entertaining in his scenes, especially in the last one. The supporting cast is all quite strong. This is by far the best aspect of the film.
As far as disaster movies go, this one is pretty tame. Not nearly enough people die (as terrible as that sounds). The concept is interesting enough. I like the idea of a plane stuck below the ocean. This creates some tension, although not nearly enough. The climax is decent, but by that point, most of the suspense is gone. The movie starts off strong, but loses its effectiveness as it goes on.
While fairly weak, this film at least tries to put on a good show. The movie ultimately breaks down and loses effectiveness, but there is enough to at least keep you interested.
Airport '77 isn't a great movie, but its impressive cast is enough fro us to stay focused. This film does just enough right to not be bad, but not quite enough to be very good. Still, with the talent on screen, this movie isn't all bad. As far as disaster movies go, it is fairly decent.
