Review:
Tim: I expected a silly, second-rate action science fiction film. I was not far off, but this is a more impressive film than I expected. It is still flawed, has many, many weaknesses, and does feel cheap. However, the story is far more interesting than I expected, and I did find myself enjoying it.
Charlize Theron is fairly decent as Aeon Flux. Although she's not great, I can't imagine another actress being able to bring her to life in the same way. She lends the film a touch of credibility. The rest of the cast is decent, but no one is too impressive. The cast could have been better, but in a silly sci fi movie, this one is better than most.
The action sequences are enjoyable. The assassin/martial arts combo is fairly exciting, and it's always fun to see people defy gravity by flying through the air. The real success of the film comes from the story, which proves to be far loftier and more ambitious than I expected.
Aeon Flux does more often feel like an MTV video or cartoon (it was, after all, based on one) and less like a realistic, live action film. However, the transition to the big screen went far better than other attempts. The movie is flawed, but not nearly as gravely as I expected. It's not good, but it's not too terrible, either.
