Review:

Tim: The Ace Ventura movies are not exactly pieces of terrific cinema. Having said that, I can't help but really, really like these movies. The first movie made me laugh, and I have to admit that I laughed almost the entire way through this one. The jokes are stupid, but they are very, very funny. This is a hilarious movie.

What is so surprising to me is how different this movie felt from the first one. In a day when sequels take the easy way out- virtually carbon copies of the originals, I really appreciate the way this movie shook things up. Ace Ventura heads off to a completely different continent, in a very different feeling movie. And yet, despite all of these changes, the movie manages to be every bit as funny as the original (and dare I say, even funnier?). I loved this aspect of the film.

Jim Carrey is really the only person who could have pulled off the character of Ace Ventura. He is so over the top, ridiculous, and larger-than-life, that it is hard to fault him or his memorable performance. I thought he delivered his lines with perfect comedic timing and had genuine fun with the role. The rest of the cast is decent, but really and truly, this is a one-man show. Carry does not disappoint, bringing every ounce of energy he has into the role.

His perforance is helped by a hilarious script. There are so many memorable, laugh-out-loud jokes and scenes. I won't go into details here, because there are simply too many terrific moments- but one of my favorites is after Ace goes over the waterfall and emerges from the water saying "I'm alive! I'm alive!" and then immediately swings his head to the right. This is awesome.

Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls might be a stupid movie, but it is a truly funny one. Comedies are so very difficult to do right, but this movie- despite all the obtacles it had to face- works beautifully.
