Review:
Tim: This is the film that first got Jim Carrey really noticed, and for good reason- he is absolutely hilarious. His slapstick comedy is incredibly memorable as he plays a role he was born to play. In all honesty, I doubt another other actor in Hollywood could have pulled off this role. This film made him a star.
Besides Carrey just being hilarious, he's given a number of hilarious scenes and situations to show the extent of his humor. It can be a huge hilarious scene like when he's talking out of his ass, or just when he utters a line like, "Holy shitballs!"
Perhaps my favorite aspect of this movie is that it includes the Miami Dolphins. I've been a Dolphins fan for as long as I can remember and its great to see them onscreen. Perhaps the best part of that is that Dan Marino gets considerable screentime. Marino has been my hero since I was a little kid, and for good reason- he is the greatest quarterback to ever play the game. Marino is actually quite funny throughout the film. Sure, his acting could use a little work, but his chemistry with Carrey is superb.
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is one of the funniest movies of the 1990's. If you haven't seen it, you're seriously missing out. It was Carrey's first huge movie, and in many aspects, one of his best. You won't stop laughing from start to finish, and hey... where else can you see a grown man talking out of his ass ask, "Can I ASS you a question?"
